About Board Step

Board Step is a unique prepartory for any new or aspiring Director, affording an accelerated learning environment and an exclusive network of peers and influences that may broaden your career opportunities.


Preparing to join or report to a formal Board can be a major challenge for senior executives. Many Board-level development programs address the principles of Directors' duties and corporate governance rather than exploring the individual leadership styles and behaviours of those who comprise and report to a Board.

Objectives of the Board Step Program:

  • To maximise your contribution to the Board and as a Board Member
  • To evaluate your contribution as a Board Member
  • To Review your work / life goals and develop future career options
  • To review trends and changes in Corporate Governance
  • To understand what constitues and effective Board

What's Unique about Board Step?

Program Format & Duration

Board Step runs over a 7 week period and combines 4 individual coaching sessions with highly experienced corporate coaches with 2 full day group sessions for up to 16 people.

Group sessions are facilitated by a member of the Steps Faculty, comprising of individuals with strong corporate backgrounds, and extensive consulting and management development expertise

A graduation dinner and post program networking event will introduce participants to established Board Directors and influencers to offer expertise in managing a Board career.

An Experiential Learning Environment that Enables Participants to:

  • Clarify the role of the Board and the responsibilities of its Members
  • Review trends and issues surrounding Corporate Governance and understand the direct implications of these to individual participants as a Board Member
  • Explore Board issues and scenarios using real-life examples to enhance key competencies required of Directors
  • Share issues, insights and experiences with a professional peer group in a safe and secure environment
  • Test learnings in the workplace and review performance and impact in the individual coaching sessions
  • Expand their toolkit to optimise performance as a Board Member
  • Develop strategies to leverage internal and external relationships to achieve business goals
  • Review and update career and personal development plans
  • Broaden networks and become part of a strong Board Step alumni group for future support and mentoring

A Positive Impact on Participants' Leadership Behaviours and Competencies through:

  • Understanding the core behavioural competencies, demands and responsibilities of a Board Member
  • Reviewing personal leadership and commuication styles and preferences, and how this impacts performance as a member if the 'Board team'

  • Applying the learnings and established Board Directors to understand the challenges and issues they have and may continue to face as Board Members
